The Amref Savings and Credit Co-operative Society (Amref Sacco) has handed over a KES3.8 million borehole to Waithaka Special School in Dagoretti South Constituency, Nairobi County.
The project is part of Amref Sacco’s corporate social responsibility programme. The cost of sinking and equipping the borehole (solar-powered pump and piping) was allocated by members during an annual general meeting in March 2019.
The handover ceremony was held at Waithaka Special School on Saturday November 6, 2021, where the community and the school lauded Amref Sacco for assisting the institution get constant supply of clean water.
In his remarks, the Amref Sacco board chairman Alex Mugao said “to whom much is given, much is expected”, referring to the spirit behind Amref Sacco’s corporate social responsibility programme.
Amref Sacco Chief Executive officer James Warui gave a brief background of the organisation and its corporate social responsibility programme which has been running since 2008.
Marketing manager Grace Macharia said they had approached Waithaka Special School in line with the Sacco’s CSR policy after noting that the school was relying on water from a shallow well within the school compound which would constantly dry off during the hot season and also get contaminated during the rainy season.
The head teacher Jane Kangethe thanked Amref Sacco’s for helping the school which admits learners with mental and physical disability.
She said the new borehole has capacity to yield 10,000 litres of water in two hours and the school will supply some of it to the community around the school at a small cost to cater for their recurrent expenditures.
The event was graced by the Amref Sacco board chairman Mr Alex Mugao. Also present were other members of the Amref Sacco board of directors, the Chief Executive officer Amref Sacco, Mr James Warui, the Curriculum support officer in charge of Special Needs Education, Dagoretti, Ms Salome Mwaniki, and Waithaka Special School board of management chairman Mr Samuel Mungai, among others.
